A group of Peronist mayors made progress in recent hours in efforts to repeal the law that limits their re-elections, those of legislators and councilors. In a meeting held on Tuesday at the Chamber of Deputies of the province of Buenos Airesonce again made clear their intention to accelerate a strategy that paves the way for new applications in 2027. However, this debate generates tensions and diverse positions within the ruling party, including the governor himself. Axel Kicillof.
The meeting held in Room 30 of the Lower House brought together a broad representation of the ruling party, including the presidents of both legislative chambers, Alejandro Dichiara and the lieutenant governor Veronica Magarioalready references of the Renovador Front, such as Ruben Eslaiman and Alexis Guerrera. Kirchnerist legislators also participated Facundo Tignanelli and Teresa Garciawho lead the official blocs in the Deputies and the Senate, respectively.
Among the mayors present were Ariel Sujarchuk (Escobar), Leonardo Nardini (Malvinas Argentinas), John of Jesus (The Coast), Mayra Mendoza (Quilmes), Javier Osuna (General Las Heras), Federico Achaval (Pillar), Mariano Cascallares (Admiral Brown), Andrew Watson (Florencio Varela) and Julian Alvarez (Lanus).

The Buenos Aires Chamber of Deputies, faced with a controversial project.
Although the initial strategy of the communal leaders was for Governor Axel Kicillof to promote a project to definitively repeal the regulations approved during the management of María Eugenia Vidalor that includes this measure as an additional article in the 2025 Budget project that is currently being debated in the Legislature, sources close to the Buenos Aires president They completely ruled out both options.
“There has to be a law. There is no point in prohibiting re-elections when it is the people of each district who decide to vote or not once again for their mayor,” they stated in statements to Scope. They stressed that Kicillof supports the initiative, but understands that both issues must be treated separately and clarified that this project must be presented by legislators from the ruling party, instead of coming directly from the Executive.
At the conclave, the communal leaders also demanded the inclusion of an extra fund destined for the municipalities in the Buenos Aires Budget. “A Municipal Infrastructure Fund (FIM) or something similar was always planned,” they admitted in the Executive Branch, but they flatly rejected that the figure climbed to $450,000 million, as it transpired.
Province of Buenos Aires: who could not re-elect
The law that limits re-elections affects nearly 80 mayors from different parties, including important figures of Justicialism such as Fernando Espinoza (The Slaughter), Mariel Fernandez (Dark), Jorge Ferraresi (Avellaneda), Mario Ishii (José C.Paz), Juan José Mussi (Berazategui), Mayra Mendoza (Quilmes), Mario Secco (Cove), Fabian Cagliardi (Berisso), Fernando Gray (Esteban Echeverría), Pablo Zurro (Pehuajó), Gustavo Barrera (Villa Gesell), Mariano Cascallares (Admiral Brown) and Ariel Sujarchuk (Escobar), among others.
Meanwhile, there are 27 radical communal leaders in the Buenos Aires territory who, under current law, are not in a position to be re-elected. Among them, the mayor of Tandil, Miguel Lunghi; that of Rauch, Maximiliano Suescun; that of Lincoln, Salvador Serenal; that of General Belgrano, Osvaldo Di Napoli; that of General Arenales, Erica Revilla; and that of General Viamonte, Franco Flexas.
Likewise, if the rule is not modified, the PRO mayors who will not be able to lead their communes again are Guillermo Montenegro (General Pueyrredón), Sebastian Abella (Bell), Javier Martínez (Parchment) Pablo Petrecca (Junín) and Jorge Etcheverry (Wolves).
For this reason, the Peronist mayors strongly promote the repeal, despite internal resistance in the official space itself and the explicit rejection of the opposition.

The opposition’s position
It is that both radicalism and PRO, the Civic Coalition and Javier Milei’s libertarians have already anticipated that they will not support the initiative. Even within Peronism, The Renewal Front – authors of the norm during the Vidal government – maintain their position in favor of limiting mandates.
Governor Kicillof prefers to maintain a delicate political balance between the demands of his territorial allies without putting the legislative agenda at risk. While the mayors push to resolve the issue of re-elections before the end of the year, the governor prefers that this discussion not divert attention from immediate priorities, such as the sanction of the 2025 Budget, the Tax Law and the pension reform of Banco Provincia.
All of this will be resolved in extraordinary events between the current week and next.
