Chuck Palahniuk Reacts to China’s Changed Ending to ‘Fight Club’

American writer Chuck Palahniuk, author of the book “Fight Club”, reacted to the alternative ending of the film of the same name, which was invented in a Chinese online cinema.

On his Twitter page January 26 Palahniuk supported this is the solution.

“This is great, great! In China, everyone gets their happy ending!” Palanik wrote.

The original film, starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter, ends with the Narrator (Edward Norton) killing his alter ego named Tyler (Brad Pitt). After that, he oversees the implementation of his anarchist project “Mayhem” to destroy the consumer society. In the picture, this is demonstrated with the help of collapsing skyscrapers.

Speaking to TMZ, Chuck Palahniuk revealed that the Chinese version of the ending is actually closer to how his book ends. In Palahniuk’s novel, the Narrator’s scheme (Edward Norton) also fails – not because of the wisdom and competence of the authorities, but because of the malfunction of his bomb, writes Gazeta.Ru.

Chuck Palahniuk also said that previously foreign publishers edited his novel to make it more like David Fincher’s cult film, writes RT.

Earlier in January, in China, where the film was recently posted on the Tencent Video streaming service, the ending of “Fight Club” was changed. Thus, David Fincher’s film ends well, as the audience learns from the text on a black background instead of shots with explosions. It says that the state has successfully uncovered Tyler’s (Brad Pitt) plan to destroy the world. After the trial, Tyler was sent to an insane asylum for treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012, the website kp.ru writes.

Representatives of the online cinema did not report the reasons for the change in the ending. The source said that the re-edited version was sent by the copyright holders and approved by the Chinese government. After that, streaming services were able to show the film, the 360 TV channel notes.

In August 2018, Chinese authorities banned a family film directed by Mark Forster about Winnie the Pooh’s grown-up friend Christopher Robin. According to Western media, this is due to a popular meme in China made by the opposition, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is compared to Winnie the Pooh.
