Prepaid cards: reduce payment accreditation to businesses from one month to two days

In joint work between the BCRA and the Ministry of Commerce, a change was established that primarily benefits small merchants.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) established a new regulation that reduces to two business days, after the date of consumption, the deadline for prepaid card issuers credit the amounts of the operations in the merchants’ accounts.

This measure is intended modernize payment methods, promote transparency in transactions and guarantee greater protection of merchant funds. At the momentalthough the money is debited from the buyer at the time of consumption, payments to businesses usually take up to a month. The new provision seeks to reverse this situation, returning to the system its essence as an agile payment instrument, while reinforcing the purchasing power of merchant funds.

He benefit is greater for small merchants, since it improves the flow of working capital, thus contributing to reducing inflation and promoting a more competitive and efficient payment industry.

Prepaid cards: when the rules begin to apply

The regulations will begin to apply to transactions made from from August 1, 2025. However, businesses classified as micro and small businesses may benefit from this provision in advance, starting March 1, 2025.

This initiative is part of the efforts made by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce over the last year to simplify procedures, formalize the economy and reduce bureaucratic costs that impact both merchants and consumers, which ultimately contributes to relieve pressure on prices.
