Regarding incoming tourism, the strengthening of the Argentine peso caused a drastic drop compared to previous months.
He National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) issued a new monthly report on the International Tourism Statistics corresponding to the period of November 2024. In it they detailed What are the most chosen destinations? by Argentines when traveling abroad, as well as the entry of tourists into the country.
As detailed in the document, there were a total of 1,168,100 Argentines who traveled abroad in said month. In breakdown, the main destination was Chili, with a 23.9%a destination where many go shopping. Then it follows Brazil (19.3%)which increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2023.
Furthermore, this number could increase due to the devaluation of the real and the great offer it represents for Argentines when compared with prices on the Atlantic Coast. Likewise, they detailed that 47.3% of resident tourists left the country through land route; he 43.6%by airway; and the 9.1%, through the waterway/sea route. Outside of South America, the 7% of Argentine tourists went to USAwith a growth of 12.5% compared to the same period in 2023.
Under this line, an increase in departures to the three countries that lead the list is expected, especially due to the arrival of summer and the carnival season.
Sharp drop in inbound tourism
On the other hand, INDEC reported a drop in the entry of foreign tourists during November. Specifically, a total of 855,000 travelers set foot on Argentine soil in that period, marking a decrease in 29.2%. One of the main reasons can be explained due to the value of the Argentine peso, which stopped being so friendly with the foreigner.
Tourists arriving at the Ezeiza International Airport and Jorge Newbery Airport reside mainly in Brazil (20.8%); Europe (17.4%); Chile (14.9%) and Uruguay (12%).
There were 2,767.3 thousand overnight stays by non-resident tourists, with an average stay of 12.3 nights. The longest average stays were observed in residents of the countries that make up the “Rest of the world” block, with 20.9 nights; and in Europe, with 19.8 nights (table 7).
