David Bowie He is one of the most important artists in the history of music. His ability to create conceptual albums, weaving influences of all kinds, consolidated him as a prestigious musician with a unique vision.
With the success that it brought with it in the 60’s and 70’s, full of important works such as “Hunky Dory”, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” and “Heroes”, the 80’s decade was presented as a challenge for the White Duke.
In his hands he had a musical idea, and the plan was for it to be danceable. Tired of experimental rock and glam, Bowie was ready to move on to a pop in which there was not much to think about.
Rodgers and Bowie, meeting between two powers
Between 1982 and 1983 two things happened; Bowie signed with EMI Records, moving away from RCA Records and his long-time collaborator, producer Tony Visconti.. In addition, on vacation he left with albums by R&B and funk exponents, such as James Brown, Albert King and Little Richard. “I asked myself, why did I choose this music to listen to? It is music that does not cause tension and, on the contrary, causes a feeling of pleasure and happiness. “There is enthusiasm and optimism in those songs,” he said.
Bowie got into commercial territory, and for this he called Nile Rodgershistoric guitarist and producer who came from working with Diana Ross. After meeting in New York in 1982, the two musicians met in a recording studio, with session players summoned by Rodgers. Although it all started because Bowie approached his peer and said: “Nile, honey, I think this is a success.”.
This was how he showed him his initial idea for “Let’s Dance”, although the strumming of the strings was closer to a folk sound that did not interest Rodgers much. “I come from dance music. You can’t call that thing you just played ‘Let’s Dance’”the guitarist destroyed it.
So Rodgers adjusted some sounds and effects, which added to that typical strumming of someone who has rhythm in his blood. He joined the song Stevie Ray Vaughana guitarist whom Bowie had seen perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival and who, according to him, added a blues spirit to the song.
In 1983 the album “Let’s Dance” was released.with its catchy song of the same name and many other hits like “China Girl” and “Modern Love”which earned David Bowie a nomination for Best Record of the Year at the 1984 Grammys.
