This Friday, strong waves of up to four meters hit the Peruvian coast, leading the General Directorate of Port Captaincy (Dicapi) to temporarily close 81 ports in the north and center of the country.

The phenomenon, known as “tidal wave“, especially affected the coasts near the border with Ecuadorcausing the overturning of artisanal boats, the destruction of docks and tourist infrastructure, and leaving thousands of fishermen without work.

Although authorities had warned about the possible surge since December 25, its magnitude surprised many.

In places like Máncora, Cabo Blanco and Los Órganostourism businesses were severely affected, and the fishing community, still affected by a recent oil spill in Lobitos, suffered another blow. The NGO Oceana Perú criticized the lack of preparation and the inadequate response of the authorities to the event.

In some towns, artisanal fishermen tried to save their boats by jumping into the sea. At least 80 fishermen were reported missing.

The waves also affected the south, reaching Callao, where it flooded Plaza Grau, affecting the operations of tourist boats. It is estimated that around 3,000 artisanal fishermen have been left impossiblyunable to work, and recreational activities in the area are suspended until at least January 1, 2025.

The material damage has not yet been quantified, but the impact is especially strong in the fishing and tourism sectors.
