The Dass shoe factory closes and fires its 360 workers

The multinational sent the dismissal telegram to all its workers on January 2 while they were on vacation. The final closing is projected for January 20.

2025 began with another company that closes its doors and leaves hundreds of workers on the streets. This is the multinational Dass that announced the closure of its footwear plant in Coronel Suárez, province of Buenos Aires, leaving approximately 360 workers unemployed. Employees began receiving dismissal telegrams on January 2, informing them that the factory will cease operations as of January 20.

As Ámbito was able to find out, the telegrams sent by the Dass Human Resources office indicated: “We notify that, as the establishment closes, we will dispense with your services as of 1/20/2025. Final settlement and compensation will be deposited in a timely manner. in their respective salary accounts”.

The union delegate of the Union of Footwear Industry Workers (UTICRA), Mariela Holzmann, expressed that there was no official notification from the company about this decision.which was communicated while all staff were on vacation.

Dass, which produces footwear for brands such as Adidas and Fila, had faced similar situations in the past. In 2018, during the government of Mauricio Macri, the company laid off more than 800 workers at the same plant, although it later reactivated its operations.

At the beginning of 2024, according to union sources, the firm had around 900 workers, but as the months went by, layoffs were carried out in various batches. In all cases, the drop in sales and the increase in production and labor costs were mentioned as the main causes of this decision.

The company also has a plant in Eldorado, Misiones, and another seven in different cities in Brazil. The truth, is that this closure represents a hard blow for the community of Coronel Suárez, since Dass was one of the main private employers in the region.

“It is understandable and we already knew for four months that people were being laid off. It is not a job, it is an entire community that is failing, and about the company I can say that it never had financial problems, it complied with the monthly payments and salaries,” said union representative Mariela Holzmann.
