In detail, the Criminal Cassation Chamber understood that Urribarri could escape before the Supreme Court of Justice will review the sentencefor which preventive detention had been issued. His brother-in-law, Juan Pablo Aguilera, was also released by decision of the Entre Ríos Justice.

During the administration of Alberto Fernández, Urribarri held the position of ambassador to Israel until he was convicted.
Both Portela and Carlomagno understood that the criterion of flight risk presented by the Prosecutor’s Office and that Cassation took had not been proven in an indubitable manner. In this way, Justice gave rise to the appeal presented by the politician’s defense.
In this way, both convicts were released and were ordered to comply with the restrictive measures originally imposed by the Trial Court. Thus, they will wait for the final ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, which did not give deadlines to rule on the case.
The case and arrest of Sergio Urribarri
The Criminal Cassation Chamber of Entre Ríos arrested former governor Sergio Urribarri on November 19, within the framework of the case for his sentence in 2022 to eight years in prison and disqualified for life from holding public office. The provisions of the provincial Cassation are preventive detention since the sentence is not yet final.
The arrest was ordered within the framework of the case in which the provincial justice system proved that Urribarri illegally used public funds to finance his electoral campaignsthrough printing and advertising contracts. The former governor – who held the position of ambassador to Israel during the government of Alberto Fernández – was convicted on April 7, 2022 and that sentence was confirmed by the Cassation of Entre Ríos in 2023.
In the same case in which Urribarri is involved, she was also removed from her position the anti-corruption prosecutor Cecilia Goyeneche, who faced a jury for poor performance. Goyeneche coordinated the team of investigators that advanced against Urribarri, governor of Entre Ríos (2007-2015), an ally of Kirchnerism.
When the province’s Court of Cassation confirmed Urribarri’s conviction, it stated that all the evidence in the case was “legitimately assembled” and that the accused were guaranteed the proper exercise of their defense. According to the Cassation, this investigation had evidence of “a volume and incriminating content rarely seen in this type of events”.
The crimes for which he is convicted Urribarri are embezzlement and incompatible negotiations with the charge. The confirmed sentence was handed down, unanimously, on April 7, 2022.
