On Sakhalin, two avalanches blocked the road

Two avalanches hit the road between Nevelsk and Shebunino in the Sakhalin region. Almost 250 cubic meters hit the track. m of snow, the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation reported on Sunday, January 30.

“At 07:35 (23:35 Moscow time on January 29), a message was received that two snow masses had come down on the Nevelsk-Shebunino highway with an exit onto the road, with an approximate volume of 150 cubic meters. m and 100 cubic meters. m,” the department said.

The press service also clarified that there were no dead or injured due to the snow melting. Two teams of three people and two pieces of equipment were involved in clearing the road. By 8:30 am (00:30 Moscow time) the road was cleared, the passage was resumed, there was no accumulation of vehicles.

Residents of the Sakhalin region were warned on January 12 about the risk of avalanches. An unfavorable situation was expected in nine municipalities. According to the avalanche center of the Sakhalin UGMS, avalanche danger was predicted in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Anivsky, Kholmsky, Korsakovsky, Nevelsky, Tomarinsky, Makarovsky, Uglegorsky and Dolinsky districts.

Employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations remind that when getting into an avalanche, the main task is to protect the respiratory tract from snow dust. To do this, you can use a collar, scarf, hood, hat or palm. According to statistics, more than a third of people get out of an avalanche without assistance.
