This five-part miniseries developed by Red Production Company represents the life of a group of friends who move together to London and his life is affected by a virus ignored by the majority, but that at its peak of transmission, brought with it great prejudices towards those who contracted it: the HIV.

This series premiered in 2021 and stars Olly Alexandervocalist of the ensemble “Years & Years”, the same name of the director’s LGBTQ+-themed series. This pop rock band released their own version of the song “It’s a Sin”, which was originally performed by “Pet Shop Boys”. Its release was used not only to promote and popularize the series, but also to raise funds for the “George House Trust”, a charity that supports people living with HIV.

The plans of Russell T. Davies, its creator, were to write a series that describes homosexual life during the era and the virus crisis in the United Kingdom, which was based on his own experiences and those of his friends. Giving tribute and commemoration to the generation that lost their lives due to the disease.

It is a production, which according to its thousands of viewers, “comes to revolutionize the dramatic genre“. It is a series, which in its simplicity, well-constructed characters, empathetic writing, iconic soundtrack of the time and a distinctive visual style, manages to be forceful and emotional regarding the history of HIV in England during the 80’s and 90’s, when it was still a disease that had to be hidden, denied and even ashamed due to the prejudices that existed in the streets, media and families.

What It’s a Sin is about, available on Max

In five chapters lasting approximately 45 minutes, which jump a couple of years between one and the next, It’s a Sin tells the story of a group of three friends gay who move to an apartment in the city of London to escape the small communes in which they grew up and be able to freely enjoy their sexuality.

It’s a Sin is Max’s miniseries inspired by life in the 80s in the United Kingdom.

But what they least imagined was the existence of a rare disease that seems to affect specific groups, such as homosexuals. Little by little, they went from the festive and uncontrolled atmosphere of the first years when they just moved to the capital of the United Kingdom, to one in which it is impossible to deny what is happening: the virus is a threat.

From that moment on, each character will have, in their own way, to deal with the issue. Where the experiences of the protagonists become entangled little by little in an inevitable and painful way, at the same time, they are determined to live freely in a society that judges and points out. appear fears, surprises and deaths that are getting closer. A series that provokes a feeling of latent empathy in every episode.

They managed to make viewers take a trip back in time to that era by representing in a very faithful way the ignorance, ignorance and violence exercised by the political and health authorities with respect to the HIV issue. Added to the misinformation and mistreatment of the media, and rejection of many families and loved ones when they found out that their loved one had been infected with “the pink plague”, as it became known at that time.
