Javier Milei’s government declared the acquisition of an anti-drone system secret

The Government declared the acquisition of an anti-drone system secret, and justified the measure for reasons of national security. The decision was confirmed this Monday through Decree 21/2025 published in the Official Gazette, signed by the president Javier Milei.

According to the norm, the Government’s decision was motivated by the need to confront the growing threats posed by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)known as “civil drones.”

In the arguments of the decree, the Ministry of Security states that these devices, due to their accessibility and versatility, could be used to attack the freedom, life and property of citizens, as well as against key strategic objectives.

The text also mentions the ease of acquiring one of these objects and the “wide reach, ease of transfer and simplicity of use.”

The standard published today in the Official Gazette indicates that The anti-drone system will mitigate risks associated with the improper use of these devices which, in some spaces, have been used for illicit purposes, such as illegal shipments in penitentiary units, to escape attempts using explosives or attacks.

“Attacks with drones of a terrorist nature can be highlighted, deliveries with drones in the area of different Penitentiary Units, the use of this equipment with explosives in order to facilitate escapes of people housed in the area of said Units, among others,” describes the text.

Faced with this scenario, the Security portfolio considers it imperative to equip itself with advanced technologies to neutralize these threats, thus guaranteeing internal security within the framework of a democratic system.

“In order to prevent the devices and technology that are intended to be acquired from being known and, for this purpose, other existing technologies on the market from being used to circumvent the correct functioning of the systems that are intended to be acquired, the Ministry of Security “considers it necessary to substantiate the contract,” the document stressed.

Furthermore, he maintains that it is necessary to “understand the determination of the organization, doctrine, deployment, training and equipment of the Argentine Federal Police and the Airport Security Police; and intervene in said aspects in relation to National Gendarmerie and Argentine Naval Prefecture.”

The decision also includes the intervention of the legal service of the Security portfolio, to guarantee that the acquisition complies with the corresponding legal provisions.

For this reason, the organization directed by Patricia Bullrich highlights the urgency of improving technical capabilities in the face of new criminal modalities that use drones and insists that it is imperative to “declare the contractual operation for the acquisition secret for reasons of National Security.”

Finally, the decree provides that the Ministry, through the Administrative Coordination Secretariatimplement the necessary procedures to implement this measure effectively.
