The Guardian editorial against Javier Milei

In this case, the British newspaper The Guardian, one of the most important newspapers in the United Kingdom, published an article titled “The Guardian’s view of Argentina’s year of austerity: painful cuts, growing poverty and a geopolitical gamble.”

In it, he assured that the three axes of the “year of austerity” were the “painful cuts”, “growing poverty” and the “geopolitical bet” to align with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.

At the same time, he stated that Javier Milei came to power because he knew how to “skilfully exploit” the “frustration with the established parties.”

“Milei promised a war against the bureaucrats, brutal cuts in public spending and a radical deregulation of South America’s second largest economy. Unsurprisingly, the result has been devastating: a recession plunged more than half of the country into poverty in the first six months of 2024”, he stressed.

On the other hand, the English media rejected the ruling party’s position on the need for cuts despite the hardships they entail: “This is very far from the truth. The reality is that Milei devalued the peso, which triggered an increase in internal prices, while using exchange controls to contain new inflationary pressures.

Likewise, the editorial highlighted that “the fall in real wages has left many unable to pay for health insurance” and that discontent translated into “violent protests.” “The economy is timidly recovering from Milei’s shock therapy, but more unrest is likely if living conditions do not improve,” he warned.

“Milei’s policies have caused great suffering and few visible benefits. Consumer prices increased by 160% in his first year in office, approximately the same increase recorded during the last year of the previous government,” the editorial compared.

No break with the past

He also questioned, without naming names, the presence of former PRO officials in the La Libertad Avanza administration. “Rather than representing a break with the past, Milei’s agenda echoes those of previous right-wing governments, whose members now hold cabinet positions”he remarked.

Finally, The Guardian warned that “allowing corporate interests to operate with minimal oversight” may “enrich a select few,” but “for the majority, they lead to greater hardship and inequality.”
