Electronic warfare battalions to be created in the Western District

Electronic warfare battalions will be formed as part of several divisions of the Western Military District. As sources in the military department told Izvestia, the decision to create such units in several divisions of the Western Military District has already been made.

The first battalion of electronic warfare was received by the 3rd motorized rifle Vislenskaya Red Banner, orders of Suvorov and Kutuzov division. Now its units are in the Belgorod and Voronezh regions.

In the future, similar military units will replenish the composition of other formations of the district – including the 144th and 2nd guards motorized rifle divisions, as well as the 4th guards tank. According to the interlocutors of the publication, such units will reliably cover the western direction, including the Belgorod region, as well as the Moscow region, from enemy high-precision weapons.

The new battalions will receive the R-330 Zhitel, Leer-3 and Borisoglebsk-2 electronic warfare systems. They can jam satellite and cellular communications, as well as the operation of navigation systems, including GPS.

Prior to this, the commander of the Western Military District, Colonel-General Alexander Zhuravlev, said that a separate electronic warfare battalion of the 3rd motorized rifle division was deployed in the Belgorod region. According to him, his personnel are currently undergoing training.

The new units will protect troops, socially significant and industrial facilities from the impact of high-precision weapons – UAVs, cruise missiles and loitering ammunition.

Now many Eastern European countries that are members of NATO are trying to acquire “smart” weapons. The Romanian army received the first 18 American HIMARS MLRS with high-precision missiles at the beginning of 2021.

In 2019, Poland signed an agreement to acquire twenty HIMARS, with deliveries due to begin in 2023. In addition, in 2019, the American company Lockheed Martin signed a contract for the supply of MLRS MLRS. Also in January 2017, the first batch of American AGM-158A JASSM high-precision air-to-surface cruise missiles was delivered to Poland.
