Russian warplanes flew over the Atlantic as part of an exercise

Russian warplanes flew over the Atlantic as part of an exercise to search for and detect submarines, at various stages they were accompanied by Norwegian and British fighters. This was reported on February 2 by the press service of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation.

“In accordance with the combat training plan, two Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft of the naval aviation of the Northern Fleet successfully completed a flight to a given area of ​​the northeast Atlantic to participate in an exercise to search for and detect submarines,” the message says.

The fleet added that the planes took off from the Kipelovo airfield near Vologda and headed for the Barents Sea. Then the pilots flew over the waters of the Norwegian Sea to the area where the assigned tasks were to be carried out. There they were escorted by Norwegian and British Air Force fighters.

“During the flight over the Barents Sea, Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft were accompanied by a pair of MiG-31 interceptor fighters,” the press service noted.

The crews of the Tu-142 aircraft searched for submarines of a mock enemy in the water region, and also conducted training in flying over unorientated terrain and piloting in the absence of ground-based radio navigation aids.

The flight of the Russian aircraft took place in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over the neutral waters of the Barents, Norwegian Seas and the Atlantic Ocean, the Northern Fleet notes.

In January-February 2022, a series of naval exercises are being held in all areas of responsibility of the fleets under the general supervision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov. The main focus of the exercises is to work out the actions of the Navy and the Aerospace Forces to protect Russian national interests in the World Ocean, as well as to counter the military threats of the Russian Federation from sea and ocean directions.

Separate exercises will be held in the waters of the Mediterranean, North, Okhotsk Seas, in the northeastern part of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Pacific Ocean. In total, it is planned to involve over 140 warships and support vessels, more than 60 aircraft, 1,000 units of military equipment, and about 10,000 servicemen to participate in the events.

Earlier, on February 2, it was reported that a British Navy warship followed two Russian warships passing through the English Channel. Earlier that day, the French Armed Forces spoke about the escort of the Soobrazitelny and Stoykiy vessels. According to published data, the job of tracking the ships was then transferred to the British frigate Argyll and the American aircraft carrier Roosevelt.
