Russia has already created 186 correctional centers for those sentenced to forced labor. They are designed for 15.5 thousand people. Of these, 77 institutions for 7.6 thousand places were created in 2021. This was reported to Izvestia by the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN).
In the Federal Penitentiary Service, such a rapid growth in the number of correctional centers is explained by the “increasing interest” of the business community in the use of the labor of people sentenced to corrective labor.
“Therefore, in 2022, a multiple increase in the placement of those sentenced to forced labor is planned,” the department stressed.
Now, out of 359.6 thousand people serving sentences in correctional institutions, more than 180 thousand convicts have the right to replace imprisonment with punishment in the form of forced labor and can be sent to correctional centers, the Ministry of Justice noted.
“The Ministry of Justice of Russia is constantly working to expand the network of correctional centers. By the end of 2022, it is planned to create another 35,000 such places,” the department noted.
By 2024, they intend to increase their number to 100 thousand, and then to 110 thousand, they added.
