Director, screenwriter and actor Viktor Merezhko was one of the few artists who worked in the genre of tragicomedy. Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Boris Galkin spoke about this on Thursday, February 3, at a farewell ceremony for the actor.
According to Galkin, they met after the premiere of the film “Kin”.
“Well, I looked at this picture – I cried and laughed, this is the truth in the genre of tragicomedy, which is neglected in cinema today. The source of this was, of course, the script, ”Galkin said in an interview with the Zvezda TV channel.
He also spoke about where Merezhko drew inspiration from and what he wrote his scripts about, RT reports.
“It’s knowing Victor’s life, to the point where it was amazing. All his works are the fate of a person, this is character. All that he did will remain in history – not only in the cinema, but also in our Fatherland. Because he was not “custom”, he was a truly creative person. He is not a screenwriter of the Soviet era – he is domestic. It is about the Fatherland, about the Motherland, about people, about characters, about a person. The nature of unrest, the nature of experiences – this is his creative source, ”said Galkin.
Earlier that day, farewell to Merezhko was held at the Central House of Cinema in Moscow.
Merezhko died at the age of 85 on January 30. As his daughter Maria noted, the screenwriter’s health took a turn for the worse in December 2021, when he fell ill and began to choke. It was, according to her, probably the coronavirus. The writer refused to go to the hospital.
Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation Armen Medvedev called Merezhko a man of rare talent, very peculiar. According to him, he had a rare sense of humor and a rare ability to improvise, it was a pleasure to be at the same table with him, to listen to his stories about friends, filmmakers, and various cases from life.
Viktor Merezhko served as secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation and Moscow, was a member of the Writers’ Union, chairman of the board of the House of Cinema. Merezhko is a co-founder of the Nika film academy and its first president, in recent years he has been an honorary member of the academy’s council.
