Russia is losing more than $11 billion a year due to the suspension of inbound tourism, Zarina Doguzova, head of Rostourism, said in an interview with Izvestia.
“We, as a relevant agency, see what enormous losses in money Russia incurs due to the suspension of inbound tourism,” she said.
The Golden Ring, St. Petersburg, Moscow and other large cities are very dependent on the foreign tourist flow. It is difficult to completely replace it with an internal one, the head of Rostourism noted.
One reason for the halt in inbound tourism is that foreigners are still forced to issue complicated paper visas. A single e-visa for citizens of 52 countries was supposed to be launched on January 1, 2021, but its launch was suspended due to the pandemic.
“Our proposal is to introduce electronic visas for citizens of those countries out of 52 with which Russia has resumed flights and from where you can come to us for the purpose of tourism. We are discussing this proposal with the Foreign Ministry,” said Zarina Doguzova. “This would have a serious impact on the recovery of tourism exports.”
