A new film by the iconic Austrian director, Oscar winner Stefan Ruzowitzky, Hinterland: Sin City, is being released. An alloy of detective, drama and noir, solved in the pictorial means of German expressionism and Remarque atmosphere.
In the center of the plot are former soldiers and officers who fought for Austria-Hungary during the First World War. They went to the front as young and strong representatives of a huge empire, and returned to the dwarf state physically and mentally crippled.
“We came up with the visual solutions that Robert Wiene (German director, author of the 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari) used in his time, used expressionist artistic means to tell and show the viewer our own story about a person and society in reality, which before it was unshakable, it turned out to be unstable and distorted, ”Ruzovitsky told Izvestia.
He also noted that recently European cinema has become a hostage to its “highbrow”, arthouse reputation.
“When I was young, European mainstream cinema was very popular: action films with Jean-Paul Belmondo were watched by everyone, young and old. And today my children (they are already in their twenties) never go to European films for entertainment. Well, except for German-language comedies, but never. And this reflects the general situation. Today, the patrimony of Europe is an arthouse.”
