Konstantin Shiring, an agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, was sentenced in Crimea to 12 years in prison. This was reported to journalists on Friday, February 4, at the Center for Public Relations (CSP) of the FSB of Russia.
“The verdict of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea came into force – 12 years in prison with a sentence in a strict regime colony against an agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR MOU) – a citizen of Ukraine Shiring Konstantin Semenovich, born in 1960. The Third Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction denied the appeal filed by the defense,” the FSB noted.
As noted in the department, Shearing handed over to Kiev a significant amount of data on the Russian armed forces on the peninsula.
Shearing was detained in Crimea in March 2020 for espionage activities in the interests of Ukraine.
As the FSB added, Shiring’s accomplice was a Russian woman, a servicewoman of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The agent enlisted her cooperation to get the information he needed.
The Russian woman was sentenced to criminal punishment in July last year, she will spend eight years in prison. The court ruled to grant a two-year reprieve.
“With regard to Shearing, comprehensive evidence was collected of his involvement in the collection, storage and transfer to the Ukrainian side of a significant amount of diverse information about the military units of the Southern Military District stationed on the territory of the Republic of Crimea, including information constituting a state secret,” the department concluded.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on January 24 that the time had come for Ukraine’s intelligence services not only to effectively deter, but also to launch offensive actions in defending the country’s national interests.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine has learned to effectively deter and counteract external aggressions. Zelensky also stated the importance of knowing information about the plans and actions of the enemy “in order to make timely and correct decisions in difficult situations,” adds Gazeta.Ru.
In the United States and EU countries, they have recently expressed concern about the alleged increase in Russia’s “aggressive actions” against Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied such accusations, saying that it does not threaten anyone.
On February 1, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya was indignant at the words of his American colleague Linda Thomas-Greenfield that Russia was allegedly trying to portray Kiev and Western countries as aggressors in order to fabricate a pretext for invading Ukraine.
The Russian envoy accused Washington of deliberate provocations. Nebenzia stressed that the United States is escalating tensions in the region with false statements about imaginary plans for an invasion.
Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the intra-Ukrainian conflict. The issues of its settlement are being discussed in the Minsk and Normandy formats.
Crimea became part of Russia after a referendum held there in 2014, in which the absolute majority of the inhabitants of the peninsula voted for joining the Russian Federation. At the same time, Ukraine refuses to recognize the results of the vote and considers Crimea its territory. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter.
