Many times, in the desire to be certain, we usually resort to quick and simple answers to complex issues. And in that same eagerness we find “incontrastable” arguments to sustain those answers. This is what always happens with this question: Does the leader born or do?
Leadership, for me, resides, in the first place, in the ability of some people to influence others, conducting their energies and action towards an individual or collective achievement; Secondly, they have a deep knowledge of how people work; And finally, they have learned to lead themselves before assuming leadership against others.
Then, the question returns and reiterates. Is it born with these qualities or are they learned? The answer is not simple, but it is not impossible. And try to answer it leads us to analyze different situations and universes.
There are certain people born with certain and certain leadership qualities that can be observed in their behavior since children interacting with their peers, their parents or relatives; But the truth is that this evidence does not necessarily have a direct correlation with a leader in adulthood.
There are also people who apparently do not denote certain qualities of “leadership” in their childhood, but that due to certain circumstances of life, such as deficiencies, accidents, losses of loved ones, among many others, they have acquired these qualities and become true leaders.
While in a case the innate is present, there is clear evidence that many children who seemed to be leaders, are not leaders in adulthood. This obviously has to do with several reasons: the first one may be that they simply did not have that vocation, beyond their natural conditions, since the volitive plays an important role, that is, “wanting to be”; The second reason is the lack of opportunities to exercise it; While they have innate conditions, different circumstances of life make them not apply it, they simply did not have the opportunity; And finally, there are those who, having innate conditions and wanting to be, have not cultivated those conditions with adequate training, training and actions to improve and enhance them.
In the second case, these are people who, not having shown apparent innate conditions, life gave them the opportunity to “become” leaders in extreme situations, whether of deficiencies, of oppression, for early losses of loved ones, for having suffered accidents or limitations of any kind. But it could also occur in the case of someone without conditions of origin, who proposes it and achieves it because he looked for it, he “made,” he formed, prepared.
Said this, the answer is that a leader can be born or become as such, depending on innate, external and volitional circumstances that are marked by the path of its evolution as a leader, in each case.
What seems to be incontrastable evidence is that everyone who becomes a true leader, recognized as such by others, knows how people work, manages to inspire others in the achievement of achievements and who, first of all, have learned to Know yourself to lead yourself.
It is here where the fundamental piece of leadership is and what distinguishes the true leaders of those who conduct a team merely from the formality of a “boss” or “responsible” position.
If I can know what motivates me, what inspires me, how I want to be treated, how I want them to talk to me; If I understand that I exist how the other also exists; If I value transparency in the relations of others with me, among many other things, then I can lead others in an efficient and genuine way.
With innate or acquired conditions, if the leader knows himself and from there he develops his ability to lead himself, then he will be closer to leading others; It should only be in a timely manner in the right place, and it will happen.
The story shows great leadership examples; In our case, among the most obvious, General San Martín or General Belgrano; At the most global level: Gandhi, Churchill, Mandela or Lord Shackleton, among many others.
Their stories and epic are full of leadership samples from self -discipline, firm purposes, determination, conviction, intellectual honesty, management of emotions and times for everything. To know if they were born or made, you have to dive in each of their personal stories, all very catchy.
The truth, visible and forceful is that they led others from self -assembly and from there they knew how to get to people’s soul, know how they work and thus inspire them to achieve great things in critical moments of the story that they had to drive.
In organizations it is important to have tools to detect talent, design development plans and compensation schemes, of course. But more importantly it is to detect innate or acquired leadership conditions to enhance them and thus find leaders who are able to bring people, results and companies to another level.
Shortly after entering an organization, one can realize if it is conducted by leaders or only bosses. How?: Simply looking at their results, their projections and its internal climate.
