It’s important to know that these three decisions, made ahead of time, can eliminate much of that angst and set you up not only to succeed, but to enjoy it:
You need to know why you do what you do. Having it all fully articulated and written in strong language gives us something with which to weigh each and every business decision: what business to do, who to work with, who to hire, how much to pay, how much to expand, etc. This includes not talking to clients who might conflict with this motive and regularly turning down all sorts of opportunities that would be great but aren’t what we do.
Because look: if you have accepted everything or every job that has been offered to you, you are not anywhere near as free, independent or in control as you think. decide whoandyou are not and whatand You’re not. That will make you better at what you do: concentrate your energy and strength on a unique object that allows you to excel in andl.
- decide chow do you want to live
Your business and your life will be intertwined. You work to be able to live and, for some, living by and for work is satisfying. But this brings us to the critical question: What do you want your life to be like? What is the life that will make you happy? Take a quick inventory of the most enjoyable and satisfying days of your life, and then make sure you work toward them, not away from them.
If you don’t want an office, don’t set it up. You can run your company remotely.
If you enjoy influence more than material success, then make sure you choose something that allows it.
If you are a calm person, you need a lifestyle that allows you to be calm, not one that forces you to constantly not be yourself. And so on.
- Decide to be okay with what others do
Finding the why and designing your life means making one of the hardest decisions of all: deciding that you don’t care what other people do. Look at the car he drives, look at his house! Okay, are you willing to change everything to be that person? If you’ve decided to follow your own unique path, you can’t go around judging people who are going theirs.
We have to stick to our vocation and character and leave others to theirs.
Arthur Schopenhauer, one of the best philosophers I have ever read, comments:
- the road is a straight line not a surface, say yes only to what corresponds to my character
- we have many options but we have to choose the exclusive ones to my character so as not to suffer
- Don’t walk in zig zag
- Do not envy people who achieve different things because that is their character and not yours
- Focus on your character and identity and don’t worry about your clumsiness
You have made your purpose clear, you have made your life priorities clear, and things will turn out the way you have chosen, but again, only if examined in their own context.
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t push yourself, but ignore the others on the course, because they’re using a different watch, a different distance, a different run.
Be happy with the life you have chosen for yourself and live it fully. Leave others to their own devices, happy or unhappy.
