The Novosibirsk Zoo does not yet know whether the mascot of the New Year’s Capital of Russia will be chosen after the cancellation of voting. This was announced on Monday, February 7, by the head of the development and visitor service department, Nikita Zhirnyakov.
Novosibirsk was previously recognized as the “New Year’s capital of Russia”. Among the townspeople, a vote was announced for a mascot from among the animals of the zoo, in which there were five pets – the Sayan snow leopard, Shilka the polar bear, Aisha’s cat, Batu the orangutan and Max the Amur tiger.
During the voting, Batu was in the lead, receiving 39.39% of the vote. However, Taiga.Info wrote that the orangutan began to occupy the top line after local deputies and bloggers tried to interfere in the voting process. As a result, the decision was made to cancel the survey.
In an interview with Lenta.ru, Zhirnyakov pointed out that the vote turned into a political confrontation, in which the zoo did not want to take part. The head of the department emphasized that the team did not have a favorite in the zoo itself, for which they would vote. He explained that there are different sections in the zoo where everyone takes care of their pet.
At the same time, according to Zhirnyakov, the reaction of the people was mostly positive and they supported the zoo amid the hype.
“For the sake of this, I want to work, and develop the zoo, and the city, and unite, knowing what events are waiting for us,” said the representative of the zoo.
