The head of the Ministry of Justice promised showers in each cell of the new pre-trial detention centers

Shower cabins will appear in all cells of the new pre-trial detention centers (SIZOs) in Russia. This was announced on February 8 by the Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation Konstantin Chuichenko.

“The main goal after all, being placed in a pre-trial detention center is not to cause any suffering and restrictions, but to isolate. We are in future projects [по строительству СИЗО] we will raise the issue of having a shower cabin in every cell,” Chuichenko said on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel.

In addition, the minister urged to avoid excessive cruelty and restrictions in correctional colonies and pre-trial detention centers. He noted that these institutions “should acquire a different look.”

“The internal regulations should not affect human dignity, in general, we go and embody there (in colonies and pre-trial detention centers. – Ed.) The principle of the reasonableness of restrictions, that is, you don’t need to do something unreasonable, which makes no sense, ”said Chuichenko.

On February 4, it was reported that torture carried out by government officials to force them to testify or intimidate them could become a particularly serious crime in Russia as early as 2022. Instead of three years in prison, the perpetrator will face up to 12 years, and the crime itself will be transferred to the category of especially serious ones.

According to Izvestia, the bill of deputies and senators from United Russia “On Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation” will be adopted by the State Duma on February 17.
