As part of the exercises of the Russian Navy, for the first time in modern history, a detachment of the three most powerful Russian warships, Project 1164 Atlant missile cruisers, will be formed. Now in the Mediterranean there is a cruiser “Varyag” from the Pacific and “Marshal Ustinov” from the Northern Fleets. As Izvestia found out, in a few days they will be joined by the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the cruiser Moskva.
As sources in the military department told Izvestia, the Moskva Guards missile cruiser is currently preparing for a long-distance voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. It is expected that he will have to go to sea after 10 February. The Mediterranean region is well known to Moscow. From September 2015 to January 2016, he headed the permanent task force of the Russian Navy in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, covering Khmeimim and Tartus bases from air strikes, and in 2020 he made another military campaign in this region.
In total, the Mediterranean group of the Navy will include three detachments – the Northern, Pacific and Black Sea fleets. Together, the ships will begin to operate in the near future. At the same time, for the first time in modern history, all three Atlant missile cruisers will meet in the Mediterranean Sea, each of which will lead the grouping of its fleet. “Marshal Ustinov” will become the senior in the detachment of ships of the Northern Fleet, “Varyag” in the Pacific detachment, and the cruiser “Moskva” will lead the Black Sea forces.
The Ministry of Defense had previously announced that it would involve the main forces of the Russian Navy in a number of exercises in January-February. In addition to the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, they will also be held in the waters of the North and Okhotsk Seas, in the northeastern part of the Atlantic and in the Pacific Ocean. In total, over 140 warships and support vessels, more than 60 aircraft, 1,000 pieces of equipment, and about 10,000 servicemen will be attracted. As Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu emphasized, exercises in the Mediterranean “will be carried out on an ongoing basis.”
