Black work, 21st century’s disease: no government stopped it, what if the cure is artificial intelligence?

Black work, 21st century’s disease: no government stopped it, what if the cure is artificial intelligence?

Obviously that the answer to the question to the introduction is a yes, resounding, but another question asked the reader: as? There are words that hurt more than a blow, and numbers that shout, even if they have no voice. Argentina has faced two persistent work problems for decades: unemployment and black work.

Despite countless policies and efforts, these challenges continue to affect millions of workers. However, in the technological horizon a tool arises that promises to transform this reality: the Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In Argentina, the drama of unemployment and job precariousness has become a scar that runs generations. It is not just statistics: they are parents who do not arrive at the end of the month, young people who feel that the future closed the door, workers who live on the tightrope of the monotax. This note is not just a complaint: it is an invitation to rethink work, to understand that in the era of artificial intelligence, or we create future … or leave us outside.

Informality already touches 45% in urban employment. That is, almost half of the workers do not have labor rights, does not contribute to social security and is outside the pension system. And, yet, the government insists that the problem is public spending, not labor exclusion.

According to INDEC data, the unemployment rate reached 6.4% at the end of 2024, an increase compared to the previous year. This is equivalent to more than 300,000 people without employment. According to my investigations, of the last 10 years, the data is false. The unemployment is close to the 8 points and people without employment, more than one million people do not have and fail to employ.

But the most alarming thing is precariousness, the black labor market, more than 50% of the active population is sub occupied or in unstable working conditions.

Artificial Intelligence: The impact on the world of work

Argentina’s economically active population includes all people who, having 14 years or more, are actively working or acting.

What are your indicators:

  • Private dependents. Rural sector and private houses: 7,000,000;
  • Monotax: 4,000,000;
  • Autonomous: 350,000;
  • Black dependents: 10,000,000

If we add the public dependents, we fear the PEA, the economically active population, Argentines who have at least one income. But notice that, half of the active population is in the black market.

Young people are the most beaten. Between 14 and 29, unemployment climbs at 13.1%, tripling the index of adults. This scenario reveals a labor market that excludes those who have more energy and training to offer.

Traditionally, proposed solutions have revolved around legislative reforms, tax incentives and employment programs. However, the irruption of AI offers an innovative perspective. This technology has the potential of:

  • Automate hiring processes: reducing times and biases in the personnel selection.;
  • Personalized training: through platforms that adapt learning to the needs and skills of each individual, facilitating labor reintegration.;
  • Formalization of independent work: IA -based applications can simplify procedures and offer advice for informal workers to transit towards formality. Independently, for something we have the emergence of the great resignation, which goes hand in hand with independent formation.

The country needs policies with a vision of the future, capable of creating genuine and quality employment, ceasing to suffocate the only ones, 300 thousand people who generate employment in the country. If we continue to strangle them, private employment will continue like this, 20 years ago

This is where artificial intelligence enters. Far from being an enemy of work, it can become a strategic ally: smart employment platforms, working monitoring systems, predictive analysis of skills demand, among others.

AI can identify emerging sectors, guide professional training, and guarantee a fairer and more efficient labor intermediation. But for that, you have to think big, regulate with intelligence and bet on an inclusive and ethical model.

The generative AI has the potential to significantly transform the Argentine labor market, although its real impact will depend on the speed and scope of its adoption, as well as the public policies implemented.

The high exposure of the most qualified jobs suggests a change in the type of tasks and skills that will be valued in the future. While AI can automate routine intellectual tasks, it can also enhance the productivity of these professionals by allowing them to focus on more strategic and creative aspects of their work.

In short, I propose that the incorporation of AI is inevitable and potentially beneficial for productivity, but requires active management by the State and social actors to ensure that its benefits are distributed equally and that workers (employers, employees and independent) are prepared for changes in the world of work and train.

The world continues to turn, and humans have to know how to adapt to the future, really.
