WHO suggested transition to a new phase of the pandemic in the European Region

In the European Region, higher contagiousness and a less severe course of the disease with Omicron may be a sign of a transition to a new phase of the pandemic, Melita Vujnovich, representative of the World Health Organization in Russia, said in an interview with Izvestia.

She noted that in populations with relatively high vaccination rates, despite the dramatic increase in cases caused by the Omicron variant, the need for healthcare systems is not as acute as with previous strains of the virus. Most COVID-19 patients requiring specialized care in the hospital are not vaccinated.

“If we quickly increase vaccination coverage in countries where it is lagging behind, it is likely that we can end the acute phase of the pandemic in 2022. This will mean that we can focus on managing potential surges in the future with more targeted measures. However, further variants and mutations of the virus are always possible, and one should be prepared for this, the WHO representative added, ”Melita Vujnovic suggested.
