WHO announces progress on Sputnik V registration process

It is impossible to speed up the process of registering any vaccine with WHO, since this will mean an incomplete completion of the process, Melita Vujnovich, the representative of the World Health Organization in Russia, said in an interview with Izvestia.

The EUL (Emergency Listing) process is the same for all vaccines, and the timing depends on many elements, including how quickly the company can provide the required data, she said.

“At the moment, the EUL process for the Sputnik vaccine has been resumed, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and all interested parties have signed the necessary legal documents. WHO received documents at the end of December and some in 2022. Whether and when verification will take place, as well as what will need to be verified, is a matter of direct discussion between the applicant and WHO Headquarters. Until the process is completed, all details remain confidential. I cannot predict when the evaluation will be completed, but I know that the process is moving forward,” said Melita Vujnovic.

The WHO representative also emphasized that the organization is encouraging vaccine manufacturers, including those from Russia, to apply to participate in the EUL evaluation process, as COVID-19 vaccination must reach all eligible populations, and the virus continues to evolve. The more options and technologies become available, the sooner the pandemic will end.
