The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, February 11, presented examples of publications in the Western media, which, as part of a large-scale disinformation campaign, contribute to the spread of the thesis about the so-called “Russian impending invasion of Ukraine.”
“At the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, the global information space faced a media campaign of unprecedented scale and sophistication, the purpose of which is to convince the world community that the Russian Federation is preparing an invasion of the territory of Ukraine. In fact, the Western media served the political order of their governments, replicating inaccurate information in a coordinated manner, participating in a full-scale information war, ”the message published on the agency’s website says.
The diplomats recalled that the Western media, in their reports on the crisis in Ukraine, ignored Moscow’s commitment to a diplomatic settlement of the conflict based on the Minsk agreements and its concerns about its own security due to the advancement of NATO military infrastructure to Russian borders.
The department’s selection includes materials from the leading media in the United States, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Montenegro, Australia, Japan and other countries. The publications prove that a coordinated information attack is being waged against Moscow.
“It is aimed at undermining and discrediting the just demands of Russia regarding the provision of security guarantees, as well as justifying Western geopolitical aspirations and military development of the territory of Ukraine,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.
The diplomatic department especially notes the position of officials in cases of exposure of fake data, citing as an example the recent statements of the representative of the EU foreign service Peter Stano on the situation around the Bloomberg material about the beginning of the “Russian invasion of Ukraine”. Even the official recognition of his words as disinformation, the politician described as “a mistake with a short life span.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry is sure that the authorities of Western countries and the media are working together to escalate artificial tension around Ukraine, using the massive stuffing of false information in geopolitical interests.
A striking example of this phenomenon in November 2021 was an article by Maurizio Molinari, editor-in-chief of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, about Russia’s involvement in the migration crisis in Europe. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called it “delightful nonsense”, demonstrating the lack of a culture of fact-checking and knowledge of geography among Italian journalists.
According to Zakharova, the United Kingdom and the United States invented the “Russian threat” for a “heroic” fight against it. The diplomat noted that by inflating the myth of the “Russian threat,” the West is trying to divert attention from its own political crises and “drain billions into armaments.”
On December 6, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin sees the West’s clearly aggressive rhetoric on Ukraine and media stuffing about Russia’s allegedly planned invasion of this country. He added that tensions can be removed only by receiving a guarantee that Kiev has abandoned a possible solution to the Donbas problem by force.
