The Russian Defense Ministry summoned the US military attache in connection with the violation of the territorial waters of Russia by an American submarine. This was reported on Saturday, February 12, in the Russian department.
The Defense Ministry said earlier that day that a U.S. Navy Virginia-class submarine had been discovered in Russian territorial waters near the Kuril island of Urup. The department emphasized that the American submarine ignored the requirements to leave Russian waters.
“In connection with the violation by the US Navy submarine of the state border of the Russian Federation, the Russian Defense Ministry summoned the defense attaché at the US Embassy in Moscow,” the statement says.
At the same time, on February 12, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry, Sergei Shoigu, held telephone conversations with the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin. The parties discussed security issues of mutual interest.
