Valenzuela Substation: A magnet for Bitcoin investments in Paraguay

The President of the Republic of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, headed the historic inauguration of the Valenzuela substation of 500 kV, the largest and most modern of the national electrical system, marking a milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure.

This strategic work, executed by the National Electricity Administration (ANDE), will strengthen the National Interconnected System (SIN) and directly benefit more than 770,000 users in the departments of Cordillera, Central and Asunción.

Valenzuela substation, with an operational capacity of 1,400 megavoltioamperios (MVA) and 12 power transformers, Connect the binational hydroelectric plants of Itaipú and Yacyretáensuring a more efficient and reliable distribution of clean and renewable energy. It should be noted that Paraguay exports much of the electricity it produces, which is why its immediate energy availability in large volumes makes it an affordable destination for investments that require immediate implementation.

According to the president of ANDE, Ing. Félix Sosa, this infrastructure not only improves the stability of the electricity supply, but also seeks to promote The industrialization of the areaconsolidating Paraguay as a regional energy hub.

“This substation is key to satisfying the growing electrical demand and supporting large -scale industrial projects,” said Sosa.

During the act, President Peña highlighted the transformative potential of the work: “This substation is the way to convert the department of the mountain range into a logistics, industrial, technological and productive center,” he said.

“I put Félix Sosa and the colleagues of the Ande a clear, tangible objective: that the Ande is the most efficient public company in America and one of the best in the world. Because the Ande will continue to be a public company in Paraguay,” said the president.

President Peña inaugurated the Valenzuela substation.

The substation not only reinforces the electricity grid, but also responds to the increase in energy consumption, which in 2024 grew 18% nationwide, partly driven by the expansion of Bitcoin mining.

Paraguay, with its abundant hydroelectric energy, has become an attractive destination for this digital industry, that demands large amounts of electricity. According to the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Javier Giménez, digital mining generates significant income in dollars for ANDE, allowing new infrastructure works to be financed.

“We are excited to see the path traveled through our country in recent times. Paraguay has left anonymity globally thanks to Bitcoin mining, industries around the world contact us daily to disembark here,” said Bruno Vaccotti, director of Penguin Group, the first mining company to set up on a large scale in Paraguay.

“What is happening today in the Valenzuela substation is a magnet for companies that have the will to use our surpluses at an adequate price, immediately and, as President Félix Sosa says, that Paraguayan energy stays at home,” he added.

Valenzuela substation positions the Guaraní country as a reference in green and renewable energy, comparable to global powers such as Qatar, But with a sustainable approach.

This work, which is part of the teacher plan of ANDE 2021-2030, not only guarantees a reliable electricity, but also attracts industrial and technological investments, promoting economic growth and social development. With this inauguration, Paraguay takes a firm step towards its consolidation as an energy and productive center in Latin America.
