Director Alexei German Jr. in an interview with Izvestia shared some details of the creation of the film “Air”. The correspondent of the newspaper managed to observe the process taking place on the site in the last days of filming.
In the center of the plot are young female pilots who become aces at a turning point in the war. While working on this project, I had to travel to different cities, from Saratov to Petrozavodsk, everywhere to come up with a unique space for the characters. Airfields were built from scratch, the Hermitage was recreated.
Shooting a large-scale military airfield lasted for three years: either the weather “set us up” and forced us to look for new solutions, or because of the pandemic, work on the picture got up for a long time.
There are six air battles in the film. With a film duration of less than two and a half hours, they will have to occupy a significant part of the picture.
“We have the largest and most complex technological set in the history of Russian cinema. No one built more planes than we do: we have 15 of them. 12 Soviet ones plus German ones. They are almost real, with cabins close to the originals,” Herman said.
Actors such as Sergei Bezrukov, Anton Shagin and actress Elena Lyadova participate in “Air”.
According to the director, he is sometimes asked why he called Bezrukov, and he admits that this actor “has energy and complexity” and he was “comfortable” with him. In addition, Herman discovered some of the secrets of voice acting, thanks to which he achieves a special coloring of the film.
At some point, it became clear that it would not be possible to find enough artists with faces from the times of the Great Patriotic War, and Herman called cadets and cadets, those who looked like guys of the same age who went to the front from flight schools.
It is planned that Vozdukh will be commissioned by the end of 2022.
