To combat the rapid formation of new strains of coronavirus, it is necessary to develop polyvalent vaccines, Pavel Volchkov, virologist and head of the MIPT genomic engineering laboratory, said in an interview with Izvestia.
“We need polyvalent vaccines against all currently known potentially dangerous strains. If we take the example of the influenza virus, quadrivalent vaccines are now widely used: against two serotypes of the A virus and two of the B virus. Such a coronavirus vaccine will simply stifle new strain formation and further development of the infection,” he said.
In addition, the virologist called for a simplification of the procedure for registering vaccines developed on the basis of existing ones.
“It is necessary to simplify the procedure for registration and testing of new forms of vaccines made on the basis of those already registered, if only a few amino acid mutations distinguish one vaccine from another. Now development and registration take from six months to one and a half years – it is clear that during this time the problem with the strain will be solved by itself, ”said Pavel Volchkov.
