The common belief that chocolate can be attributed to aphrodisiacs is incorrect. Studies do not confirm such properties, Polina Koroleva, an endocrinologist and nutritionist at the Atlas clinic network, told Gazeta.Ru on February 14.
“You can’t say it’s an aphrodisiac,” she said.
Meanwhile, according to Koroleva, cocoa fruits do contain substances that, in combination, can have a positive direct and indirect effect on sexual health and function. She attributed flavonoids to such substances, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. Methixanthin, biogenic amines and cannabinoid-like fatty acids contained in cocoa fruits can have a psychoactive effect.
Thanks to flavonoids, dark chocolate is good for brain function, in particular, it improves concentration and memory, the nutritionist added.
Earlier, on February 1, nutritionist Elena Solomatina spoke about the beneficial properties of cocoa. This drink, as noted by the doctor, is extremely beneficial for the heart and blood vessels due to the antioxidants and magnesium it contains. Cocoa helps in the prevention of thrombosis, heart attack and stroke. In addition, it improves brain function, fights cholesterol plaques and helps with high blood pressure. Another advantage of cocoa is that there are no side effects, since the drink does not cause addiction.
