Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, on behalf of the head of state, held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus. This was reported to journalists on February 15 at the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
Shoigu informed the President of Syria about the conduct of exercises of the Russian Navy in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.
Assad and Shoigu also discussed issues of military-technical cooperation between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Minister visited the Russian Khmeimim air base in Syria. He inspected infrastructure facilities and laid a wreath at the busts of the Russian military who died while performing combat missions in Syria.
In addition, on February 15, it was reported that Tu-22M3 and MiG-31k long-range aircraft with the Kinzhal aviation complex arrived at the Khmeimim base. They will take part in the naval exercise of the inter-fleet grouping of the Navy in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.
