The NATO summit is actually shaped by another crisis topic: the Russian attack war against Ukraine. After the announced ceasefire in the Middle East, this will come back to the fore.

Russia is the reason why the annual defense -relevant expenditure of the alliance states is to be increased to at least five percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035. An amount of at least 3.5 percent of GDP is to be paid to classic military spending. This has been the greatest upgrade of NATO since the end of the Cold War.

So far, Europeans and Trump have not found any harmony on Ukraine. The US President is in a field of tension: on the one hand, he repeatedly emphasizes tight frets to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two telephoning on the phone several times. The bottom line did not happen.

On the other hand, Putin has to put up with sharp tones. After a massive Russian drone attack, Trump had written about Putin: “He got absolutely crazy! He kills a lot of people unnecessarily, and I don’t just speak of soldiers,” wrote Trump. “Rakets and drones are shot on cities in Ukraine, without any reason.”

Before his election victory, the 79-year-old had repeatedly postulated that he could end the war within 24 hours. The Republican has not succeeded.

A question that remains and nobody can answer: Will Trump leave the NATO summit prematurely or does he pull his program through until Wednesday? In mid-June, Trump surprisingly left the G7 summit in Canada before the end.
