Trump demanded that the Europeans are involved: NATO’s five percent goal is to be decided today. At the start of the summit, the Chancellor justifies what he is about.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) emphasized at the beginning of the NATO summit that the European Member States would increase defense spending on their own conviction. “We do not make the decisions we make to do someone a favor,” he said with a view to US President Donald Trump, who had requested the expenditure of five percent of gross domestic product before taking office in January.
At the summit in the Haag, all 32 members want to agree to this goal, although individual countries such as Spain, Slovakia and Belgium are skeptical. Merz still spoke of “great agreement”. “We are looking forward to a historical NATO summit,” he said.
He once again justified the increase in investments to the armed forces with the new threat situation. “Russia not only threatens Ukraine, Russia threatens the entire peace, the entire political order of our continent.”
