NATO summit: Rutte is not too embarrassing for Trump’s mood

In order to keep Trump happy, the NATO boss is not too embarrassing

Donald Trump is known for his short -lived interest and his fluctuating mood. This could be a problem for NATO. But Mark Rutte apparently knows what to do.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte wrote US President Donald Trump a message in front of the NATO summit in the Haag in which he congratulates him exuberantly on the successes of the past few days. “I congratulate you and thank you for your determined action in Iran, which was really extraordinary and that nobody else dared to do,” praised Rutte Trump in the letter that he promptly published in his online service Truth Social.

Rutte, whose office confirmed the content of the message, copied in the letter partly Trump’s style when writing messages, for example by using capital letters. “Europe will spend money in a big way as it should be, and that will be your victory,” says the message.

“Tonight you will fly to another great success in the Hague,” Rutte wrote with reference to the NATO summit in the Hague, where the output goal of the NATO countries is to be decided on Wednesday. It stipulates that the allies spend at least 3.5 percent of the respective gross domestic product for defense by 2035 and a further 1.5 percent for defense -relevant infrastructure. This together corresponds to the five percent that Trump had demanded from the Allies.

“It was not easy, but we all made them commit to the five percent,” says Ruttes message to Trump. That is something that “no American president has achieved in decades”. Rutte said on Wednesday that it was “completely okay” that Trump published the news. When asked whether this was not embarrassing, he said. “Absolutely not – what is in this text message is a representation of facts.”

Trump is committed to the obligation to assist NATO summits

Keeping the United States under Trump in NATO has become a priority of Ruttes. For this purpose, he not only got used to flattering dealings with the US President, but also tailored the program of the summit. “See you at the dinner of his majesty tonight,” wrote Rutte at the end of the news, knowing about Trump’s preference for Pomp and nobility.

The Dutch king Willem-Alexander organized a reception for the heads of state and government on Tuesday evening- and had invited Trump to spend the night in his palace, which he assumed.

In the past, statements by US President Donald Trump had repeatedly aroused doubts. Article 5 of the NATO contract regulates that in the event of an attack on the support of the Allies, the allies can count and an attack on a member is assessed as an attack on everyone.

On the outward flight to the NATO summit, Trump was asked by a journalist if he was on Article 5. The US President said the hanging of her definition. “There are many definitions of Article 5.” He was determined to be her friend, he said with a view to NATO allies. He was determined to help them.

NATO boss Rutte does not doubt that the United States would be in an attack on the joint defense of alliance partners. “It is clear to me that the United States fully committed themselves to NATO and Article 5,” he said at the second summit in the Hague.

There, the US President now committed himself to the assistance obligation within the meaning of Article five in the North Atlantic Treaty. “We are fully behind them,” Trump replied with a view to the allies on Wednesday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in the Hague to the question of a journalist. To the planned massive increase in NATO partners’s defense spending, the US President said that “very big things were announced today at the summit”.
