The influence of cell phones and social media on children not only creates a headache, but also educational politicians. The Federal Minister of Education sees the state as a duty.
The President of the Education Ministers’ Conference has given a rejection of a nationwide regulation of mobile phone bans in schools. There could be no such thing “because we live in federalism,” said Simone Oldenburg on Thursday at the Conference of Education in Klütz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the left-wing politician is also Minister of Education. Each country has its own recommendations “which are not far apart”.
For them, it is not just about mobile phone use. “We need competence on social media.” School has only to a limited extent there. Health protection and youth media protection are needed.
Federal Minister plans expert commission
Federal Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) also referred to the limited influence of the schools. It is important to include the parents. “The smartphone in bed and on the dessert” of the children and younger young people is an at least as important question as the use at school. She also referred to the necessary media education, youth media protection and the regulation of social media. Children, for example, are exposed to violence, pornography, extremism or so-called cyber grooming. “As a state, we have a protective function.”
An expert commission with the participation of the federal states is intended to create a scientific basis for dealing with it. Prien wants to announce their composition before the summer break. The first results should exist at the beginning of next year.
Another topic of memorial work
A focus of the ministerial meeting in Klütz was also the memorial work. In the end, Prien said it was about young people learning empathy. “Because without empathy, one is also unable to really grasp the dimension of discrimination, discrimination and persecution. This is a big task for our schools today.”
Prien renewed her statement that every young person should have attended a memorial during his school days. This must be embedded well in the class. For Friday, Oldenburg invited her counterparts to visit the Wöbbelin dunning and memorial near Ludwigslust for Friday.
