The neighboring country of Poland is a great supporter of Ukraine and sees itself threatened by Russia. That is why Foreign Minister Sikorski does not mind if Germany catches up with the armament.
According to the Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Poland and Germany are supposed to meet the danger from Russian rockets in the Kaliningrad in the Baltic Sea Exklave. The minister called this in Warsaw an “urgent Polish-German challenge”.
The plans of the new federal government for the recovery of the Bundeswehr in Poland did not trigger any concerns, said Sikorski (62) in the interview of the news agencies dpa, pap and AFP. “We are good allies, and we have to build armed forces who do not scare anyone, but (Kremlin chief Vladimir) put off Putin.”
Sikorski: German hesitation would be worse
Poland on the Ostrand of NATO has been strengthening its army for years because it feels threatened by Russia. In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has announced the establishment of the strongest conventional army in Europe.
“I already said in my annual speech in parliament: As long as Germany is in NATO and EU, I fear German hesitation more than the German army when armament. I still think so,” said Sikorski. Therefore, he also evaluates the German special fund of 500 billion euros for security.
Russia has stationed Ballistic Iskander rockets in the Kaliningrad Kaliningrad, which can reach Warsaw, Berlin and Copenhagen with up to 500 kilometers.
Poland sees changed attitude at Trump to Ukraine
The latest NATO summit in the Haag has classified Russia as a “long-term threat to the alliance”, said the Foreign Minister. It was therefore decided to increase the expenditure for defense and security to five percent of the annual economic output by 2035.
Sikorski spoke of a “fertile summit” and saw a changed attitude of the United States to Russia’s war against Ukraine: “I believe that President Trump understood that it is Russia who does not want to end the war that it is Ukraine that has unconditionally approved an armistice and that Russia blocks.”
Warsaw wants to support Ukraine with Russian fortune
Sikorski called for Ukraine to support the frozen Russian state’s assets in the West. “Ukraine is well cared for for this year,” he said. “But next year we, I think we are facing the dilemma whether we continue the financial support for Ukraine with the money of our taxpayers or with the aggressor’s money. Don’t ask me what I am for!”
He hoped that the new German government is moving on this question. So far, Ukraine has only received interest rates that are generated from around 300 billion euros in Russian national assets. Moscow regards this as theft of his property.
