There has been an armistice between Israel and Iran for the beginning of the week. But Israel would break it under certain circumstances, says security expert Christian Mölling.
In the opinion of the political scientist Christian Mölling, the ceasefire between Israel and Iran has been stopping between Israel and Iran. “The Israelis will not let up now,” said Mölling, security expert at the Brussels Think Tank “European Policy Center”, in the current issue of the star– s “Die Lage -International”. “Yes, there is a ceasefire. But in case of doubt, Israel will be ready to break the matter.”
According to Mölling, it is currently difficult to assess how strongly the Iranian nuclear facilities are damaged after the twelve days of Israel and the United States. There are skeptical assessments of US secret services. But they were already cautious before the US bombardment with bunker-breaking bombs, regarding the chances of success. However, it is clear that Iran’s nuclear program continues to run a danger, possibly also from nuclear systems that have not yet been publicly known. Surprises are to be expected, according to Mölling.
Atomic conflict with Iran: “Lots of scope” for diplomacy
The struck Iranian regime is in an ambivalent location after the preliminary end of the fighting. On the one hand, it must secure its rule. On the other hand, Tehran could continue to use his nuclear potential in order to achieve a negotiation success in the dispute over the sanctions with which Iran is further occupied. Despite the bitter war between Israel and Iran, Mölling still sees “a lot of scope” for a diplomatic solution. This is less about trust than transactionality, i.e. what can be offered to Iran. “It would be the most false thing you could do if diplomacy is now cutting sails,” said Mölling.
The criticism of NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte for his submissive tone in dealing with US President Donald Trump at the NATO summit in the Haag only shares political scientist Mölling to a limited extent. “What would have been the alternative?” The time of simple solutions for Europe is over. “We are simply no longer in Control,” said Mölling. “Donald Trump is in Control.”
