At the end of the month, Annalena Baerbock resigned her Bundestag mandate. In her last speech in parliament, the Green politician warns of the AfD-as a “project of intimidation”.
Former Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) used her last speech as a member of the German Bundestag to warn of a threat to democracy by the AfD. The AfD is “a real danger to Germany,” said Baerbock, who wants to resign at the end of the month, on Friday in the Bundestag. The AfD is a party that “came to parliament democratically, but has something else in its goals”.
Baerbock commented in a debate about a draft law of the AfD parliamentary group to ban the financing of politically oriented non-governmental organizations by state funds. The AfD thus operates a “project of the intimidation of civil society,” warned Baerbock.
The Greens politician pointed out that the financing stop required by the AfD could also hit sports organizations. “The AfD is not only a danger to this parliament, but also for Germany ever becoming a soccer world champion again,” said Baerbock.
Her first speech as a member of the Bundestag twelve years ago, the protection of the climate was applied, said Baerbock. Their last applies to the protection of the free-democratic basic order. The Greens politician called on the democratic factions in the Bundestag to hold together in times of crisis.
“When you go, you can always say: get up together,” she said. “I know how difficult it is.” However, she thanked the fact that the democratic factions in the Bundestag have shown again and again in difficult topics that “our democracy is more important to them than party colors”.
Baerbock was elected as the new president of the United Nations General Assembly in early June. Your term for the post in New York begins in September and lasts one year.
