SPD party conference duped Klingbeil: billing with the Ich-AG

Drücker, standing ovation, jubilation calls. Lars Klingbeil smiles, but the joy does not go to him: Bärbel Bas was voted the new SPD-CO chairman with a fabulous 95 percent. When the election result is read in the “City Cube” in Berlin shortly afterwards, the hall fulfills a deep murmur: only 64.9 percent expressed confidence. It is a billing.

“You can imagine that the result is a difficult result for me,” says a visibly shocked SPD leader. What should he say?

An experienced comrade had made it to this formula before the vote: the top could not be beheaded if the party was already on the ground.

Bärbel Bas knows that the past few months have left traces, sometimes wounds. After all, BAS ran as the new SPD chairman because Saskia Esken no longer does it. The partly malicious handling, which Esken may have moved to withdraw, also irritated BAS.

“You have to experience that solidarity is not always a matter of course – not even in social democracy,” says Bas. From the monitor above the party congress stage, a serious one -looking Esken looks at the approximately 600 delegates who clap loudly. Although many of them lack solidarity for weeks and months. Klingbeil’s handling of the debate that he let it run for a long time also irritated many.

Bas does not give a combative speech. The Duisburg native with a workers’ biography speaks controlled, is emphasized. They are punches, but they arrive at the delegates. But is that enough to set up the SPD again? Still slogans and old recipes that have not worked in the past?
