In the fight against terrorist groups, several Western countries are deployed militarily in Mali. A withdrawal has now been announced. It is said that the intention is to remain active in the region.
France, its European partners and Canada end the military anti-terrorist operation in West African Mali.
They announced this in a joint statement that the Élysée Palace published after consultations in Paris on Thursday. It was said that the aim was to remain active in the Sahel zone.
A number of armed groups are active in the Sahel region, which stretches south of the Sahara from the Atlantic to the Red Sea. Some have pledged allegiance to the terrorist groups Islamic State (IS) or al-Qaeda. The former colonial power France is currently involved in the fight against terrorism with 4,300 soldiers. One focus of their “Barkhane” combat mission is Mali, where up to 2,500 French soldiers are stationed. France is also leading the military operation “Takuba”, in which several European countries are involved and which also serves to fight terrorists.
The EU training mission EUTM and the UN stabilization mission Minusma, in which the Bundeswehr is involved with a good 1,350 soldiers, are also running in Mali. According to French information, a total of around 25,000 soldiers are deployed in the area.
