Before Donald Trump let go of the national guard on Los Angeles, he called Gavin Newsom. Now both argue whether it was about the planned commitment in the conversation.
Due to alleged wrong reporting in connection with the dispute over the dispatch of the National Guard to Los Angeles, the California governor Gavino Newsom has sued the conservative US broadcaster Fox News for hundreds of million dollars. With regard to a telephone conversation between him and US President Donald Trump, Fox News “deliberately twisted the facts” in order to present him as a “liar”, newsoma explained in his complaint.
He demands $ 787 million (672 million euros) from the broadcaster. His lawyers said in a letter to FOX News that Newsom would do without his request if the broadcaster canceled his presentation and apologized to it publicly.
The lawsuit is about a phone call between Newsom and Trump that is said to have taken place that evening before the president sent the national guard to Los Angeles due to violent protests against his migration policy. Part of the political discussion about the controversial posting is whether Trump had informed the democratic governor of California about his decision in advance.
A conversation, two versions
Newsom’s compensation claim corresponds to the enormous sum that Fox News paid to the election machine manufacturer Dominion Voting to prevent a defamation process. The broadcaster had repeatedly claimed without any evidence that Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election against Joe Biden had contributed poor election machines.
“If Fox News wants to lie to the American people on behalf of Donald Trump, it has to bear the consequences as in the Dominion case,” said Newsoma. The conservative broadcaster called the governor’s lawsuit “hopeless” and accused Newsom of the freedom of expression.
Both Newsom and the White House have confirmed that the phone call took place on the night of June 7th – a few hours before Trump announced the posting of the National Guard to Los Angeles. Nothing was communicated to the content. However, Newsom asserts that there was no question of the National Guard Operation.
Three days later, after 700 marine fans from the US Army had arrived in LA, Trump had assured that he spoke to Newsom on this decision on the evening before. The governor immediately rejected this presentation. “There was no call. Not even a voice message,” Newsom wrote, who was traded as a democratic presidential candidate for the 2028 election, in the online service X.
