Olaf Scholz holds a farewell speech at the SPD party conference. But he makes it clear: his party should continue to be able to count on him.
Former Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised his party to make social democratic politics even after his term. “I plan to be a former Chancellor that the SPD is always happy about,” said the 67-year-old in his farewell speech at the Federal Party Congress in Berlin. With its other former Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, the SPD has had a difficult relationship for years.
Scholz also promised to work in the Bundestag election when dealing with the historically bad result. “I want to take part in the debate with the new role,” he said. The focus must be on the original social democratic topic of respect.
Scholz said that right populism find new support in many wealthy countries right populism, Scholz said. “Progressive parties, social democratic parties, cannot be successful without the idea that the world will get better.” Therefore, the company not only has to work for chief physicians, but also for factory workers, nurses and pensioners. The SPD has a responsibility “that from every life perspective you can live reasonably, decent and recognized”.
