In the SPD, opinions differ widely for a mandatory military service. Negotiations run for hours at the party congress. Pistorius is spared a severe defeat.
The SPD has averted an impending difficult dispute over the option of a mandatory military service according to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’ plans. According to the German Press Agency, an initiative application from Jusos was changed after hours of crisis talks, which initially rejected the anchoring of a compulsory military service in the planned draft law.
The wording is now to vote at the party congress: “We do not want an activatable legal option to use conscripts before not all measures to increase voluntary increase.
The SPD is committed to a new military service “which is based on voluntariness and is based on the Swedish military service model”. With an increase in the attractiveness of military service, the necessary growth of the reserve and the Bundeswehr should be achieved.
The Bundeswehr must therefore reach a personnel strength of at least 60,000 additional men and women and 200,000 reservists.
Against the background of the security policy situation and the expectations of allies, it is recognized that sufficient staffing of the Bundeswehr is necessary. “We must be able to react if the security policy situation or the Bundeswehr’s needs require this.”
