Linke calls for a right of proposal in the case of judge election

Without the left, the Union, SPD and Greens have no two -thirds majority in the Bundestag. However, this is necessary to choose constitutional judges, for example. The left now makes a claim.

DIE LINKE calls for its own right of proposal in the occupation of judges’ posts at the Federal Constitutional Court. “We want the nomination key to be changed and we also have a nomination,” said party leader Jan van Aken of the “Rheinische Post”. “Of course, the CDU can then suggest someone we would choose with, even if it is not our heart’s desire. But we can also suggest someone who is not the CDU’s heart’s desire.”

Half of the 16 judges of the Federal Constitutional Court are elected by the Bundestag and the Federal Council, a two -thirds majority is required for the election. Since the Union, the SPD and the Greens do not have a two -thirds majority in the new Bundestag, they are dependent on votes from the left when choosing. The right of proposal for the candidates has so far been based on the strength of the factions, the left has so far not been taken into account as well as the AfD.

Letter to the political groups of Union, SPD and Greens

According to Van Aken, the left has now written a letter to the political groups of Union, SPD and Greens, in which it demands a say. If someone could not go with a proposal, you can exceptionally take a veto, said the party leader. That is the normal process and a completely reasonable solution.

The handling of the Union with the left had recently caused significant annoyance in the left faction. After faction leader Heidi Reichinnek had refused support on Friday in the election of the parliamentary committee to control the secret services, she threatened with consequences, also in the election of judges. Van Aken pointed out that the black and red coalition also needs a two-thirds majority for the planned reform of the debt brake. “It only works with us. But you have to talk to us for that.”
