28 years after Hong Kong’s return to China, there is hardly anything left of the former promise of democracy. Now the last Beijing -critical party has also given up.
Shortly before the 28th anniversary of the return to China, the League of Social Democrats (LSD) also announced its dissolution in Hong Kong. She explained her retreat “in the face of immense political pressure”.
After the Democratic party from the Civic Party and the resolution decision, the era of visible Pro-Democratic parties in the special administration region finally ends. Although these groups have had little influence in the past few years, these groups have had little influence in recent years, but the LSD occasionally organized even smaller street protests and information stands.
The end of the party takes place shortly before the 28th anniversary of the former British crown colony to China on July 1, 1997. Even under British rule, Hong Kong was not democratic – but in the course of the return, China had promised to grant the city extensive autonomy and gradually democratization based on the principle “one country, two systems”. For example, the Hong Kong should be allowed to choose their own head of government directly. A promise that was never redeemed.
Beijing is expanding control – criticism of government course
On the contrary: after mass protests and riots, Beijing massively strengthened its control and introduced a strict security law five years ago that is considered an instrument against democracy movement. Many opposition politicians and activists have been detained or fled abroad – some of them are now being sought in Hong Kong.
According to media reports, the LSD was under pressure to announce its dissolution itself, otherwise it could have been closed.
In Hong Kong, there are debates that the government continues to emphasize the topic of security excessively years after the protests are supposed to. Critics warn that this focus on control and deterrence is a shame on the international reputation of the city. With John Lee, a former professional police officer and chief security officer has been running the government of the Asian financial center for three years.
