Wolfgang Böhmer was considered a deliberate politician who was missing any urge to publicize. Many saw him a classic state father in Saxony-Anhalt. Now he has died.
Former Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Wolfgang Böhmer (CDU) is dead. The State Chancellery in Magdeburg said. The former gynecology chief physician Böhmer was Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt from 2002 to 2011. According to the CDU, he died last weekend at the age of 89.
Böhmer started his political career as a member of the state parliament in 1990. From 1991 to 1994 he was finance and then social minister in a CDU/FDP government. After a devastating defeat of the Union, he took over the management of Saxony-Anhalt CDU in 1998. In 2001 he became the parliamentary group leader and CDU top candidate for the 2002 state election. The CDU had a clear victory with him and formed a coalition with the FDP. After four years in office, Böhmer and his party had another clear election victory in 2006, but had to change the coalition partner because of the weak FDP result and from then on ruled with the SPD.
A deliberate politician
Böhmer was considered a deliberate politician, who, in contrast to many of his colleagues, was missing any urge for public self -expression. Many saw him a classic state father. Before Böhmer came to politics, he spent his professional life as a doctor. For decades he worked as chief physician of the gynecological department of a hospital in Wittenberg. Böhmer, born on January 27, 1936 in Dürrhennersdorf (Saxony), was widowed and married for the second time in 2004.
Böhmer was one of the great Saxons, Saxony-Anhalt said Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU). “It was a guarantee of compensation and stood for the preservation of traditions as well as the modernization of our country.
