At the start of the second half of the year, Denmark took over the EU Presidency. Can Germany prevent northern neighbors throughout big conflicts?
Denmark has taken over the rotating presidency of the EU’s Council every six months. Germany’s neighbor in the north succeeds Poland, which held the chairmanship in the first half of the year.
Danish government officials will thus lead numerous ministerial meetings by the end of the year and will act as an intermediary for disagreements between the 27 EU countries. The main thing is to guarantee the smooth possible expiry of the EU legislative procedures.
Use and climate protection
Thematically, the Danes want to campaign under the motto “A strong Europe in a changing world”, especially for mutual upgrading against Russia and for more competitiveness in the EU.
In addition, the government of the Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen hopes to be able to advance the fight against unwanted migration and measures for climate protection. An example of this is the proposed agreement on a climate goal for 2040, which is intended to enable climate neutrality in 2050.
Great challenges for the Danish Presidency of Council are likely to become the persistent Hungarian blockade of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and the European cohesion in the customs dispute with the United States.
There is also a risk of money on the subject of money because the discussions about the long-term EU budget should begin in the next few months from 2028 to the end of 2034. The positions of the Member States differ widely. For example, Germany, as a net payer, resists the budget of the budget of more than a trillion euro.
The start of the Danish Presidency of Council is celebrated on Thursday in Aarhus, the second largest city in the Scandinavian country. Prime Minister Frederiksen has invited EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her team as well as EU Council President António Costa.
The social democrat Frederiksen, who has been ruling since 2019, is one of the longest -serving head of government in the EU and is considered an advocate of extensive support from Ukraine.
Most recently, she made headlines internationally with the fact that US President Donald Trump made it a decisive cancellation in terms of his Greenland claims. Frederiksen and their three-party coalition, which are extended over the political center, are also known for a rigid migration policy.
